Though the set’s appearance is based on kitsune, I also leaned into elements of kabuki—specifically the kumadori or stage makeup-like patterns on the mask. Light brown (or gold) often represents monsters or nonhuman spirits, while blue embodies the negative emotions of malevolent entities. Both kitsune and onryō (怨霊, “vengeful spirit”) are traditionally portrayed with blue.
